Priority #1: My Relationship with God

Yes, I am a Christian.  Yes, I am a born-again, saved by the blood of the lamb, bible-believing woman.  I have, in the past, let my shyness, timidity, and desire to be liked by everyone get in the way of sharing that.

Not anymore.

My God deserves more from me.

My family deserves more from me.

The world deserves more from me.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) says, "For God did not give you a spirit of timidity, but one of power, of love, and of self-discipline."   I am done being timid, I am ready to be powerful through Him, love like He does, and exemplify self-discipline as He has called me to.

So, on to the practical side of this priority.  How am I going to go about repairing and building my relationship with God?

Spend time in His Word and truly, deeply try to comprehend it's message for me.  Psalm 119:11 (NIV), says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."  Why is it important to be in the Word, memorize scripture, and spend time studying as much as possible?  That one's simple.  A person whose mind is on the Word of God is unlikely to fall into sin.  A person whose mind is on the Word is much more likely to turn to God in times of trial rather than turning away from Him.  A person whose mind is on the Word is much more likely to walk in Jesus' footsteps.

I am currently doing a study with my Mom and sisters, but that only requires one short session a week.  I would like to spend time daily in the Word, but I'm not 100% sure where to start.  I am working on getting something together, so any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Pray intentionally.  In Luke 22:39 - 46, Jesus tells his disciples to pray intentionally.  In verse 46, he specifically tells them to, "...Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation".  Pray is powerful, very powerful.  I am ashamed to say that I have wasted many a prayer, praying because it was what I was supposed to do.  Without even thinking about it, though, I am getting better about praying intentionally.  I think that a lot of that has to do with my awakened sense of gratitude for the blessings in our life as well as a renewed sense of seeking God.

My Mom once bought me an AWESOME prayer journal as a result of this blog post she read.  It really was an awesome journal.  Sadly, it was underused and didn't make the cut during one of my pregnancy purges.  Sorry, Mom.  But, I can say that using a prayer journal like that is very, very helpful for intentional prayer and I am going to start one right away.  I WILL make ample use of it this time!

Seek accountability from fellow Christians who are strong in their walk.  There are a lot of Biblical precepts pertaining to accountability, so I won't list them here, but this is a great article if you're interested in learning why accountability is important.

This has always, always been hard for me.  I do not like feeling that vulnerable with others.  I consider my family my "accountability partners", but I also know that's not always the best situation.  I think finding someone to be accountable to will be the hardest thing to do.  I am praying over it, though, and know that God will send me the right person to share this walk with.

Spend time in fellowship with Christian brothers and sisters.  Why go to church?  Can't I just worship at home?  Doesn't the bible say, "where to or more are gathered?".  I struggle with the answer to this, but I can't say that I've ever developed a very valid reason for it, probably because there just isn't one.  Here's a neat article I've found that is a response to a letter from someone who was basically "anti-church".  It definitely opened my eyes as to why I should be in church, in fellowship with believers, as often as possible.

This is one of those things that will probably be discussed A LOT with my future accountability partner!  I struggle with what we call the "can't make it in time syndrome" and have been absent from church more often than present in recent years.

And finally, thank Him continually.  I am a bit of a complainer.  Sometimes, I just like to be a Debbie Downer.  I don't know why.  Maybe I like it when someone replies, "it's not that bad, look at it this way".  MM would probably say that it's because I just like to be upset about something or like drama.  He may be right, but I hope not.

The past year has really shown me what it means to be thankful to God.  He has given us our beautiful, healthy Bunny, He has blessed us with financial security even with me being a SAHM, we have a roof over our heads, food to eat, family that loves us, and wonderful friends.  I should not have ANYTHING to complain about.

The great thing is, I'm starting to change.

I look at my daughter and tell God how truly grateful I am that He chose us to be her parents.  I see my husband in his role as a father and thank God for such a wonderful man to guide our child(ren).  And with every prayer of thanks, my heart gets lighter and my outlook brighter.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think the difference is noticeable.  (On most days.)

I know God has been waiting for me to put Him back in His rightful place as my #1 priority.  I know He has amazing things in mind for me.  I cannot wait to truly know Him again.  My time as a lukewarm Christian has gone on far too long.  I am ready to be on FIRE!

The JOYS of Pregnancy

MM and I have known we are pregnant for all of 6 weeks, give or take a few days. Boy has that 6 weeks flown by! I am 10 weeks, 3 days pregnant today, and I feel like we are RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!!! My freaking out about the time-frame aside, this pregnancy is beyond beautiful. I have had little to no morning sickness, but I have been pretty exhausted. It's not affecting us too much, though. We are blessed by God with a very leisurely, stress-free life and MM is being a wonderful man and letting me, nee telling me, too sleep as much as I need to.

On December 21, we had our first prenatal appointment. We found a wonderful doctor who had just relocated to Alpine, and she was able to see me within days of my calling. We confirmed that our due date is August 14, 2010, just a day off of what we estimated, and we had an ultrasound that afternoon. We were so excited to see our little one and just felt wonderful leaving the hospital that day. We thought that baby looked like a little Gummi Bear, so that is his/her in-utero nickname.

Yesterday was our second prenatal check-up and everything went wonderfully there. Dr. Harrington told us not to get our hopes up as she pulled out the doppler, but after some hunting, she was able to track down Gummi Bear's heartbeat. It was amazing...just...amazing! I cannot describe how blessed I felt at that moment. MM was grinning from ear-to-ear the rest of the day. It was amazing! Dr. Harrington informed us that our "little rascal" was quite the swimmer and said that the heartbeat/rate was "perfect". That was a relief to this worrisome momma-in-the-making.

Through all of this, I have had my doubts, my fears. I imagine every other mother-to-be feels the same way. My weight when we got pregnant could make it a challenge down the road, but I am being as careful as possible. We are eating as healthfully as we can and I am walking as often as I can. All in all, I know that God has everything under control and that we can trust Him to allow what is best for our family to happen. I will not stop leaning on Him until the day I leave this earth and I know that He will never abandon me! At this point, we are so blessed by this pregnancy that I feel grateful and verbalize my thanks to Him often and whole-heartedly. I know that He will be there for us this day and every day thereafter.

Convicted

"Garbage in, garbage out." Remember that old saying? I haven't heard it in quite a while. The more I think about it, the more I feel that the phrase is quite out-of-date. Why? Because it seems like almost every form of media, whether that be magazines, books, newspapers, television, movies, webisodes, or etc., is FULL of garbage. Not just a little bit, but A LOT of make-your-grandmamma-cry garbage.

God's conviction can come in mysterious ways and in mysterious places. Reading a fellow blogger's post about The Women of Joy conference in San Antonio led me to Stephen Curtis Chapman's web site. There, I found out about his wife, Mary Beth Chapman's NYT bestseller, Choosing To See.

As I was reading part of the description and some reviews, God's Spirit moved in me. He made me think about what I've been reading lately. These aren't things that I just happen to see on TV, but things I'm intentionally choosing to read. Most of them would make my grandmother blush and are definitely garbage. They are not pleasing to God and should not be pleasing to me.

Philippians 4:8 tells us, "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." It doesn't take me long to figure out that my reading material does not reflect this advice from Paul and Timothy. I don't know what changes God has in store for me, but I do know that He does not want me to seek out anything other than what glorifies Him.

Based on that realization and conviction from above, I've decided that I will not read a single book by a non-Christian author from now until the end of the year, at the very least, be it fiction or non-fiction. I have already taken the first step to remove every secular book from my queue at Booksfree and replaced each one with a Christian work. Sending the cry out to my Facebook friends yeilded some wonderful suggestions from four awesome, intelligent people. I know I won't be disappointed with their suggestions. There are two sets of books at the house that will be back in the mail tomorrow and I am going to pack my to-be-read pile into the back of the closet for the time-being.

This will be a tough project for me, but I know that God's hand is in it. Quite frankly, I'm out of touch with Christian authors and will probably make some blunders along the way. Especially where non-fiction is concerned, I will seek out the advice and recommendations of my friends and family. I ask for your prayers as I seek to do what's honorable in what I read.

What has God convicted you of lately? Did it require a big change? How did you handle it?

29; A Gift (and A Lesson) From God

God works in mysterious, subtle ways. And sometimes He smacks you over the head with a two-by-four. Today was a two-by-four day for me.

I'm 29 today. I cried myself to sleep last night because I never thought I'd be 29 and childless, the weekend wasn't the birthday celebration we had expected, and MM was sicker than he's been in years. I woke up this morning grouchy and not ready to face my 29th year.

MM usually does the grocery shopping, and was going to go tomorrow, but his illness necessitated a Sunday trip and I was the only candidate. I ended up just planning out the meals and grocery shopping for the month, so the day was starting out with a rushed breakfast and a long shopping trip. I was not happy.

I headed out, as usual, to water the garden, mumbling to myself because, being my birthday and all, MM would have done it for me if he was well. I wasn't out there two minutes when God showed me His birthday gift for me. This beauty was flitting around my garden, drinking in the water I'd just showered on the ground.

She was huge, probably the size of my hand, and certainly the biggest one I've seen outside of a zoo or botanical garden. I am still in awe of the bright, beautiful colors. I am even more in awe of the fact that she kept flying away, over our tall metal fence, and kept coming back, giving me plenty of time to run inside, get the camera, and snap these pictures.

They aren't the best shots and they don't convey what I was feeling when I was watching her flit about, but I know she was a gift from God to remind me that I have SO much in life to celebrate. I am so humbled by the fact that God sent me a reminder of His grace rather than a harsh discipline for my selfishness.

My day still didn't turn out the way I had envisioned it, and I'm still a selfish, imperfect human inside, but I am reminded that the God who created that stunning butterfly created me with even more care. He wants me to be happy and content with my life, but He wants me to be content with the simple things He's blessed me with, like His creation.

I am a work-in-progress; every day I am reminded how un-Christ-like I really am, but every day I am given a fresh slate to try again. I know God has amazing plans for my life, and at 29-years-old, I know I am right where He wants me to be. I glory in the fact that tomorrow is unknown to me, but known to Him.

Thank you, God, for the birthday gift you sent to this selfish human. I pray that you will help me, every day, to remember that no matter how bad I think I have it, I have salvation through your Son, and my eternal joy is secure in You. Help me also to remember that everything in my life happens in your perfect time and to count my blessings every day!

"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" - Jeremiah 29:11, NIV

Oh where, oh where...

...has my little blog gone, oh where, oh where can it be?

It has felt like ages since I blogged here. I once again had great intentions of blogging regularly, but have failed miserably. This time, I am not making any promises or even hints of promises that I will be here regularly. I will just be here when I'm here.

I do acknowledge that I owe two wonderful ladies and sisters in Christ a 100th blog post prize. As soon as I figure out what to substitute for the scarves (way too late in the season for those now), I will be sending them with my sincerest apologies to Jenna and Michelle.

2010 has been a "normal" year for us so far. For me, it is to be my year of change, sacrifice, self-appreciation and coming to peace with those things I cannot change. I've been doing well to eat right, exercise as much as possible, figure out cost-cutting methods to pay off more debt and have also started focusing on a little more me time. On the spiritual front, though, I haven't quite figured out where to turn. I'm sure God is leading me somewhere, but to be honest, I don't think I've actually asked for or looked for His guidance. I think some earnest time on my knees is important and necessary if I want to become the best person I can be.

Our Christmas was full of family and blessings. The dogs were the most spoiled in our little household with each of them getting new, posh beds and plenty of new toys to occupy their time. I see that exciting things are already happening in the blogging world, especially to the precious bloggers that I know IRL. I want to be a part of that excitement, so maybe you will see me around more, then again, maybe not! I'm going to make blogging more of a "me time" activity rather than a "I feel like I have to" activity.

Slowing Down

I've been doing a lot of reflecting lately. Reflecting on my life at this moment, reflecting on God's word, reflecting on His purpose for me. My one BIG conclusion is that I'm supposed to slow down. I'm supposed to be taking care of myself and my home. No, that doesn't mean cleaning it to perfection. It means making my house a HOME, not a show-house. I struggle with perfection daily. I want to eat perfectly, work out perfectly, cook perfectly and clean perfectly! It is EXHAUSTING!

The past few days, I've slowed way down. I haven't done what didn't have to be done. Guess what? The house is cleaner because I don't stress over details, I just get it done. I work out more! I've decided to enjoy our family more, so I'm walking each of my dogs almost daily. (They have a HUGE back yard to run around in, so it's not as if they're suffering if we don't go on a walk.) I'm cooking simpler meals, but we have more time to sit and enjoy them. I'm feeling more fulfilled and happy than I have in a while. I'm doing what I want to and not what people expect me to do and that's a huge step forward for me.

My fervent prayer is that I stick to this slower pace. It is so easy for me to get stressed and start rushing and fretting about details. I have come to realize that nobody in my life notices half as much as I do. They don't care if I didn't put my shoes away last night or if I forgot to change out the scent in the wax warmer. They just want me happy and healthy and that is what I will strive for every single day!!

Number 50!

That's right, ladies and gentlemen! This post is my 50th! I wanted to post sooner, but I had thoughts of grandeur, celebration and complexity! I wanted it to reek with celebration. Then I decide to save that for 100. Lol!

Not really. I'm very excited about getting to post 50 in such a short time. I've had this blog up and active since October 2008 and I've seen some blogs where they celebrate #50 on or around their one year anniversary. I did ponder the subject of this post to an unnecessary extent. I even let the world know about my quandary via MySpace and Facebook status updates! I did have a suggestion that I do a give-away, and I would have loved to, but I have no crafty goodness to offer up right now and I've got two Craftster swaps going on, so there's just no time for that.

I think that this is a good time to post another progress report. So, first things first.

One of my resolutions this year was to work on my relationship with God. It has been broken for far too long now, and I just want the good Lord to repair it. I've been doing my best by doing several paragraph-a-day devotionals throughout the week. I'm not always consistent, but I am working on it. I'm also working on my attitude towards going to church more regularly. It's not that I don't want to, it's just that I enjoy slow weekend mornings with no obligations. I know I need fellowship with other Christians, so I'm praying for an excited attitude about church. I want the anticipation of fellowship, worship and God's word to far outweigh anything else I could be doing. I want to have a merry heart;

"He who is of a merry heart has a continual feast." - Proverbs 15:15 NKJV

The next big resolution was for me to stick to my dear hubby's eating and exercising plan for one month. That is going extraordinarily well. I didn't have a loss for the past week, but I've not missed a workout and have not veered from my eating plan. I know that I'm losing inches as all my clothes are becoming more and more loose. My rings twirl around my thinning fingers with reckless abandon nowadays. That's a wonderful feeling!

So, that is post #50. I hope it wasn't too boring, but I felt like the proper content was what was truly going on in my life right now. Where I am now without regards to the past or the future. I'm putting my life in His hands and that's the most important thing I could post about right now.

"Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank him for his answers." - Philippians 4:6 TLB

Thanks for reading, and as always, many blessings to you and yours.

Finally Blogging Again

It was pointed out to me today that I hadn't blogged since Monday. (Thanks, Mom ;)) What an anomaly! Life was throwing me some curve balls and, while I'm still not completely through them, I know God will see me through. I've got lots of family and friends interceding on my behalf and I've put this in His hands. I know that there is a reason for all of this and I trust Him.

The Lord did remind me that He is in charge of everything by sending us a little snowstorm yesterday. Most of the snow is gone, but it certainly brightened my day and blessed our dry land with about an inch of precipitation. Here's me, after work, smiling, for a change!

I took this one of the courthouse across the street from my office at about 3:30 p.m. yesterday. It was just starting to accumulate then. This morning, everything was white.

Here's the back yard. Thank goodness yesterday was my workout day of rest! It was coooold!

And Toby. Poor Toby. He LOVES to play in the snow, but hates when it's coming down. He wanted to be inside all night.

I have tons more I want to post about. I finally downloaded all our pics from Thanksgiving at my parents' and I had such a great time that I really want to share! I might be a bit sporadic with my posting, though. Jason and I are continuing our "Santa Clause" marathon and are watching #3 tomorrow night. The Spurs are playing Friday night, so I'm sure I'll have blogging time during the game.

One last thing for the day. Jason has been so incredibly understanding since my "emotional distress" started. He is truly my best friend. Sometimes I'm astonished at how much songs mirror real life for myself and many others. Jason Mraz is one of my new favorite artists and his song "Lucky" perfectly describes my Jason and I right now.

Do you hear me? I'm talking to you
Across the water, across the deep, blue ocean
Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm tryin'.

Boy I hear you, in my dreams
I feel your whisper across the sea
I keep you with me, in my heart
You make it easier when life gets hard.

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again

They don't know how long it takes
Waitin' for a love like this.
Every time we say goodbye
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you, I promise you I will.

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again

Lucky we're in love in every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday.

And so I'm sailing through sea
To an island where we'll meet.
You'll hear the music fill the air
I'll put a flower in your hair.

Though the breezes through the trees
Move so pretty, you're all I see.
As the world keeps spinnin' round,
You hold me right here right now.

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again

Lucky we're in love in every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday.

Yep. That's our love! Sorry to be sooo terribly mushy. It's just how I'm feeling right now. Lol!

As always, thanks for reading and good night!
