Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony BourdainMy review
rating: 4 of 5 stars
To me, Anthony Bourdain is a culinary pop-culture icon. He embodies hard-core cooking and all it entails. The culinary "underbelly" is known to many and he exposes it for exactly what it is/was. I'm sure the culture has changed somewhat, but being employed by a faux-French eatery in 2001 showed me that things were much the same as what Bourdain describes.
He reels you in to his narrative from the very first word and kept me yearning for more. I gave this book four stars because I couldn't just recommend it to anyone. An appreciation for real cooking is a must for a reader as is quite a bit of acceptance for worldly exploits. This is not the story of a nice, midwestern housewife nor is it the glitz and glamour we all admire on Food Network. It is raw, gritty and at times offensive, but undeniably true. I'm eager to get my hands on the other books he's written. I've also been overtaken by a tiny desire to once again take on the saute line on a busy Saturday night!
